About ESI Scheme

The Employees' State Insurance Scheme was introduced under the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948 as a Social Security measure. The whole Scheme is administered by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation and the State Government. Medical Benefits and various other benefits including cash benefits are provided under the Scheme. In terms of an agreement with the E.S.I. Corporation, the Government of Tripura is entrusted for administering the E.S.I. Medical Benefit Scheme for the Insured Persons and their families.

As per agreement between the E.S.I. Corporation and the State Government the expenditure for running the E.S.I. Medical Benefit Scheme is to be shared between the E.S.I. Corporation and the State Government in the ratio of 7:1 subject to overall ceiling of the expenditure per I.P/per annum as may be fixed by the E.S.I. Corporation from time to time. The present ceiling of expenditure of Rs. 3000/- per I.P/per annum was fixed by the E.S.I. Corporation. At present there are 15,707 number of IPs in the Tripura State. The Scheme was implemented in the Tripura State in the year 2009. The Government of Tripura was administered the ESI Medical Benefit Scheme upto March, 2019 directly through Labour Department. Thereafter, the Government of Tripura has constituted a Society namely “Tripura Employees’ State Insurance Society” under Chairmanship of Chief Secretary of Tripura for administering the Medical Benefit under the Scheme in the Tripura State
